HISTORY OF FILTECH, INC.

Filtech Inc. was founded in 1969 as a corporation in the state of Pennsylvania as a manufacturer’s representative and distribution organization.

The scope of products handled in the beginning was air and gas filters to commercial, industrial, governmental, and institutional users, and contractors. Applications included filtration for heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, specialized applications such as “clean rooms”, environmental containment of hazardous particulate, and filtration of gaseous contaminants for the microelectronics, nuclear, and biomedical fields.

In view of the strong technical capabilities of Filtech personnel, backed up by engineering assistance provided by our principals represented, technical recommendations continued to be offered to owners, consulting engineers, design-build contractors, and original equipment manufacturers on various filtration applications and environmental systems.

In the beginning, the office was separate from warehouse operations. The warehouse was in leased space in the LaSalle Building on Pittsburgh’s North Side serviced primarily by outside personnel. In 1974, a 6200 sq. ft. building in East Pittsburgh was acquired, permitted integration of our operations.

Product coverage was expanded to include packaged clean rooms, laminar flow cabinets, down-flow filter modules, and biological safety cabinets. All of which are built around HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters. HEPA filters have a minimum of 99.97% efficient on 0.3 micron particles. They provide “super clean”, sterile, or very high level particulate containment. Also marketed were “wet benches” for semi-conductor applications and other laboratory equipment.

The late 1970’s resulted in widening our capabilities into service. This included testing and certification of clean rooms, laminar flow devices, biological safety cabinets, and HEPA filter replacements. Associated functions such as testing for room air change rates, particle counts, and indoor air quality surveys were also initiated.

Because of rapid growth in the distribution segment of filtration products, the decision was made to relocate to larger facilities (25,000 sq. ft.) in West Homestead (a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pa.) in 1984. By its 20th anniversary in 1989, Filtech Inc. had grown to 17 employees.

In the course of strategic planning, it was decided to concentrate Filtech’s efforts as a “total filter source” of air, gas, and liquid filtration products. This resulted in the discontinuance of marketing laboratory equipment to focus on the core business of filtration products, and particularly the growth in filtration products for industrial applications.

Marketing changes, decentralization, and reorganization of management responsibilities, were also initiated to service customers better and pursue opportunities in the filtration markets.

In 1999, a 2nd building was purchased in West Homestead adding an additional 8,200 square feet of warehouse space. In its 31st year of business, employment had reached 34 employees.

In 2007 steps were taken to shorten lead times to customers for special size filters. In-house manufacturing of special size filters was started.

In 2012 we began our own delivery service. A 2nd 24 foot box truck was added in 2013.

In 2013, equipment was purchased to automate portions of the filter manufacturing process.

In 2014 Filtech’s offices were updated and expanded to accommodate our growth.

By 2015, Filtech employment had grown to 41 team members.
